2D code

A two-dimensional (2D) barcodes contain much more information than traditional one-dimensional linear barcodes. 2D barcodes make use of vertical dimension to encode in more data. Two-dimensional barcodes have become very popular; they use auto scanning CCD and laser scanners whereas one-dimensional use the light pen type of scanner.PDF417 is a two-dimensional barcode that can pack the greatest amount of data into the smallest space. In a short amount of time PDF417 has established itself as the standard in two-dimensional barcodes.

You can create a two-dimensional barcode by using a barcode generating software. Since 2D codes were first introduced users wanted them to carry much more data per unit, there are many different codes in use today and many were introduced to achieve higher data density.

A 2D code is an optical machine readable data that shows an object into which it attaches. 2D codes can allow for the organization of large amounts of data and are widely used in healthcare and hospital settings. They are also used to facilitate the separation and indexing of documents that have been imaged in batch scanning applications.

2D codes are also used to track objects and people, and keep track of rental cars, airline luggage, waste, express mail and all parcels.

Some 2D codes are embedded w a hyperlink to a certain website. A built-in camera mobile device can have the capability to scan and read the embedded information and open users’ browser automatically. Mobile users can scan a product and search for the best price within their vicinity by just taking a picture of some of the more embedded 2D codes.

The mapping of messages and barcodes is referred to as symbology. The specification of a symbology includes the digits or characters as well as starts and stop markers into bars and space. The most common 2D code are matrix codes, they feature a square pattern with seemingly randomly placed black pixels within them.
